DOGS AROUND THE WORLD - Humane Education Program
HCHS has been doing this program at Van Buren Elementary in Plainfield for seven years. The teachers and students look forward to it as do the handlers and their dogs. We have at least 12 dogs and their handlers participating in this program.
The objective of Dogs Around the World is to teach children (k - 3rd), about different breeds of dogs, their temperaments, their needs, and the like. We are planting a seed for when they are adults and have the responsibility of selecting a pet for themselves and their family. We want them to ask, Will this breed fit well into my lifestyle and my family's lifestyle?" We are encouraging awareness that dogs have different needs. For example, some breeds need exercise more than others, some breeds can not tolerate hot temperatures, and so forth.
It is a fun program enjoyed by the teachers, children, pet handlers, and dogs.
