Groundbreaking for the new Hendricks County Animal Shelter!

September 4th was the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Hendricks County Animal Shelter......FINALLY!!!!

At 3 p.m. many folks assembled under a canopy (it was a hot, sunny day) and listened to David Whicker, President of Hendricks County Commissioners, speak eloquently of the years it has taken to get to this point of turning over the dirt to begin building a new shelter for the animals, employees, and residents of this county. David talked of Mary Ann Lewis' (Chief Animal Control Officer) patience and he thanked her. He also thanked others who contributed----county employees as well as Hendricks County Humane Society ($80,000 architect fees), Friends of the Shelter, and Red Bledsoe. David acknowledged someone he had just learned was very significant to this new shelter---Betty Hoaglund! Betty, a member of HCHS, has been involved with animals for a long time. Apparently, Mary Ann singled her out as being the one who in 1994 urged Red Bledsoe to do the car shows as a fundraiser for a new animal shelter. Mary Ann doted on Betty throughout the ceremony and Betty was tickled to be acknowledged. We all clapped for her. Now we will patiently wait while the shelter is built and look forward to a better shelter for the animals in Hendricks County!

SPAY / NEUTER ASSISTANCE

Thousands of adoptable pets are euthanized in the Indianapolis area each year because there simply are not enough homes for them.

In addition to reducing the pet overpopulation problem the surgery can help pet owners in these ways:

  • Eliminates many behavior problems such as biting, spraying, fighting, and roaming. Altered pets make better, more affectionate companions.
  • Reduces the risk of cancer. This saves you money in the long run on veterinary bills.

Many people neglect to have this relatively simple surgery done to their pets due to the cost involved. There are low cost alternatives in our area for people who need help with this.
