Hendricks County Humane Society (HCHS) is a not-for-profit 501(c)-3 organization which was founded during 1974. We are a volunteer-based organization, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors that is served by Hendricks County business people and citizens. Bylaws and Board Policy, provide the foundation, as well as all direction, for HCHS endeavors.
HCHS programs are funded by donations, fundraising events, grants, bequests, supporterships, and memorial contributions. We do not receive tax money or government assistance. Our programs are dedicated to the purpose of serving as “A Voice for the Animals”.
To carry out the goals of the Humane Education Program, HCHS employs two part-time Humane Educators. In order to maintain the day to day operations of our postal service, email, and voice mail, HCHS employs a part-time Office Administrator.
HCHS does not own or operate a shelter. The Hendricks County Animal Control Facility (HCACF), located on Old US Hwy 36 in Danville, serves as the local shelter. HCACF is operated by the County Government and funded by taxpayer money. Their phone number is 317-745-9250. They are currently open to the public on Saturdays to facilitate adoptions.
- Educate the community about the humane care and treatment of animals
- End pet overpopulation
- Advocate animal welfare
- Further the bond between people and animals
Donations received by HCHS are used to fund the following programs:
- Humane Education: Our Humane Educator visits area pre-schools, schools, libraries, clubs, scout groups, etc., presenting FREE programs to children and adults. Programs cover the topics of responsible pet ownership, safety around animals, reducing pet overpopulation, and respect for wildlife.
- Spay/Neuter Assistance: HCHS is committed to helping reduce pet over-population, by partnering with area veterinarians to provide spay/neuter services (and co-required up-to-date vaccinations) at a discounted rate, with no requirements for eligibility. We also offer periodic FREE spay/neuter specials.
- Satellite Adoption Events: Since HCHS does not own or operate a shelter, we work partner both the Hendricks County Animal Control Facility and various pet rescue groups, to provide opportunities for these animals to be seen by the public for adoption.
- Support Other Community Efforts: HCHS donates time and resources to other community efforts which contribute positively to the welfare of animals. Our recent involvement with other community efforts include the following:
- HCHS donated 6 Dog-I-Pot Waste Stations, which have been distributed amongst local parks and trails.
- HCHS donated $80, 000 toward the design of the new Hendricks County Animal Control Facility.
- HCHS donated $10, 000 toward the completion of the new off-leash Avon Paw Park.
- HCHS has made donations to support various spay/neuter clinics, shelters, and rescue groups as special needs arise.
